Korean Courses in Regular Schools in the Washington Metropolitan Area

 

Currently, there are 14 schools that offer Korean as a foreign language:

Fairfax Academy is physically located in Fairfax High School. However, anyone in Fairfax Country Public Schools can take the program. Currently, there are 4 Korean classes available throughout 3 sessions - 1st Session from 7:30 ~ 9:00, 2nd Session 9:30 ~ 11:00, 3rd Session 12:55 ~ 14:05. If school transportation is available, participants come to Fairfax Academy (Fairfax High School) in school bus for the class and come back to his or her school after the class. If school transportation is not available, participant must provide his or her own transporation to Fairfax Academy

New Hope Academy is a private school that offers curriculums in K-12. Korean is required for all the students from K-8. Once student enters high school, he or shy may continue to study Korean as elective. Korean Language and Culture Center at New Hope Academy offers various activities with Korean traditional instruments, and students can learn Korean language and culture simultaneously.

From 2012-2013, Colin Powell Elementary School offers Two-way Korean Immersion Program, which runs a half of their curriculum in Korean. Two-way Korean Immersion program is a world language enhancing program that offers Math and Science classes in Korean and Social Studies class in English. Colin Powell Elementary School started this Two-way Korena Imersion program for kingdergarten from 2012-2013 Academy Year and expanded the program each year. From 2018-2019 school year, it has been expanded to 6th grade.

 

Farifax County Public Schools currently offers afterschool Korean program in 6 elementary schools in its school disctrict (Eagle View, Colin Powell, Culb Run, Deer Park, Mosby Woods, Fairfax Villa, White Oaks). Montgomery County Public Schools offers afterschool Korean program in 3 elementary schools (Clarksburg, Matsunaga, Gaithersburg) and in two middle schools (Kingsview, Robert Frost).

 

Online Korean Class in Fairfax County Public Schools

 

From 2012-2013 Academic Year, Fairfax County Public Schools offers credited online Korean classes. This online classes can be taken by not only students in Fairfax County Public Schools, but also anyone in the United States.

 

There are 4 classes, Korean 1, 2, 3 and 4. Once student completes all three classes, he or she can get 3 credit-hour. In case student passes credit exam for 2 credit-hour, he or she only needs to take Korean 3 for 3 credit-hour.
